Learn more

Every day, we see parents who want nothing more than to protect their children during divorce or separation, but don't know how to help them through this difficult transition.

Children caught in the middle of family conflict often:

  • Feel responsible for their parents' happiness or unhappiness

  • Struggle to express complex emotions they don't fully understand

  • Develop behavioral problems at school or at home

  • Withdraw from friends and activities they once enjoyed

  • Feel torn between loving both parents when they're in conflict

  • Become overly focused on avoiding family conflict, often suppressing their own needs and feelings

Parents, despite their best intentions, often focus on legal battles and adult concerns, unintentionally leaving children's emotional needs unaddressed. Without proper support, these wounds can follow children into adulthood, affecting their own relationships for years to come.

Our Mission as Maryland's Premier Family Counseling Center

The National Family Resiliency Center is dedicated to helping children and adults in Howard County and throughout Maryland preserve a sense of family, foster healthy relationships regardless of family composition, and constructively adjust to change throughout the family life cycle.

We believe that to live full and enriching lives—and to participate in and contribute to their community—children, adults, and families need support to cope with significant loss and change. Our unique approach works with all members of a family, from children as young as six through senior adults.

What sets us apart is our commitment to working with family members facing complex challenges, including those experiencing clinical depression, anxiety, and other mental health challenges. Our therapists specialize in helping children navigate emotional complexity, supporting individuals caught in the middle of family conflicts, and assisting families affected by mental health issues.

We understand that children often see the world in absolute terms—everything is either completely good or entirely bad. Our approach helps children develop more nuanced emotional understanding, teaching them to recognize and appreciate the complexity of feelings and relationships.

The National Family Resiliency Center was founded with a simple but powerful belief: When parents receive the right support and children have a voice, families can emerge from challenging transitions stronger and more connected than before.

Our Story

Pioneering Family Support in Howard County Since 1983

The National Family Resiliency Center began as "Children of Separation and Divorce," a project initiated at the Family Life Center in Columbia, Maryland, a non-profit center supported by philanthropist James Rouse. Founders Barbara Mandell and Risa Garon recognized the critical need for specialized services supporting families navigating complex life transitions.

At a time when comprehensive family support systems were virtually non-existent, NFRC emerged as a groundbreaking initiative. The organization created innovative programs that brought together mental health professionals, lawyers, and judges to prioritize children's emotional well-being. What began as the Children of Separation and Divorce Project (COSD) at the Family Life Center became an independent non-profit in 1991, later evolving into the National Family Resiliency Center to reflect its expanded mission of supporting families and professionals across the country.

One of our most enduring initiatives—our Peer Counselor program—emerged organically from our earliest support groups. When children from our first group expressed a desire to continue supporting each other, we recognized the profound power of shared experience. This program has since been recognized with three Volunteer of the Year Awards from Howard County, a testament to its meaningful impact.

Since 1983, NFRC has supported over 32,000 individuals and families, helping them navigate challenging transitions, develop effective communication skills, and make compassionate, child-focused decisions.

OUR APPROACH TO DIVORCE COUNSELING

The NFRC Difference: Child-Centered, Family-Focused Care in Maryland

At the National Family Resiliency Center, we take a fundamentally different approach to helping families through divorce and separation:

  • Unlike approaches that focus primarily on legal arrangements or adult needs, we begin by understanding what children are experiencing and what they need to thrive. Our counselors are trained to translate children's concerns in ways parents can understand and act upon.

  • We know that helping just one family member isn't enough. Our programs work with children, parents, grandparents, and even new step-parents to create a supportive environment for everyone involved.

  • Our unique position at the intersection of mental health and the legal system allows us to help families navigate both the emotional journey and practical considerations of separation and divorce.

  • Rather than simply helping families survive divorce, we provide the tools, skills, and support to help them rebuild and thrive in their new family structure.

  • Our therapists work closely with other professionals including attorneys, mediators, teachers, and medical providers to ensure coordinated support for each family's unique situation.

Our Mission

Our mission is to help children and adults preserve a sense of family, foster healthy relationships regardless of family composition, and constructively adjust to change throughout the family lifecycle. To live full and enriching lives as well as participate in and contribute to the social and economic fabric of their community, children, adults, and families need support to cope with significant loss and change. National Family Resiliency Center’s (NFRC’s) unique approach works with all members of a family from ages six through senior adults.  NFRC is committed to working with family members who may suffer from severe clinical depression, bipolar disorder, substance abuse, and learning challenges. Therapists work with children who are caught in the middle of their parents’ conflict, their parent’s mental illness and/or addictions, as well, as non-divorce counseling. NFRC’s overall vision is to help families of all compositions remain and enhance resilience.

NFRC Directors, Clinical, and Educational Staff

  • Risa co-founded NFRC with Barbara Mandell to create a center where parents remain decision-makers about their children's wellbeing. She specializes in developing child-focused parenting plans and works with couples, individuals, blended families, and teens. Risa has served on the Maryland Child Custody Commission and trains professionals in child-focused approaches to family transitions.

I work with children, teens, adults, and couples who are seeking counseling to support concerns they have, make decisions about their present and future, and most importantly, strengthen relationships. I have had the opportunity to develop all of our programs at NFRC with a strong belief that parents need to remain decision makers about their children, and can, when given the opportunity to work as co-parents with child development experts. I specialize in helping couples develop parenting plans that focus on the child and are based on developmental needs and challenges for everyone in the family. I believe children benefit from a loving and healthy relationship with both parents and caregivers. I work with grandparents as caregivers, step parents and significant others in addition to birth or adoptive parents.

I work with individual adults or groups, provide marriage counseling and therapy, and offer blended family counseling. I enjoy working with teens and specialize in individual or group sessions for adolescents. Many of the teens I work with are initially hesitant about counseling. Through joining with them in their lives, we develop trusting relationships where teens can grow, gain confidence and cope with family and peer relationships

I continue to learn from our clients and work to develop new programs and services to better support and advocate for all families. I was a member of the recent Maryland Child Custody Commission, Howard County Public School Student Services Committee, and I serve on the board for the Maryland Association of Families Conciliation Courts.

My philosophy is to help families or individuals to achieve their goals by working together using a variety of techniques to help my clients feel comfortable, while building a trusting relationship through humanistic, cognitive and behavioral therapy.

My best rewards are hearing from clients about how they are doing, working with them as they return with new challenges and celebrating their achievements in life.

I am honored to work as a team with a highly professional staff.

  • With 25 years at NFRC, Susan specializes in guiding families through separation, divorce, and remarriage. She helps newly single parents balance personal rediscovery with parenting responsibilities and is passionate about keeping divorce out of the courtroom through creative, child-centered parenting plans.

    Some of my specialties:

I enjoy helping newly single parents re-discover themselves and figure out what they want their future to look like, and how to mesh that with being a single mom or dad. Sometimes it means changing jobs, re-training or joining the workforce after many years. Sometimes it's reconnecting with their child or children in a new way.

Working with teens has been an especially enjoyable part of my work. Creating a safe and trusting connection with the teen allows me to be a "guide" in their journey to find their way in the world. Discovering their truths, developing a sense of confidence using their voice and practicing new skills all help in dealing with the social challenges, relationship issues or family conflict they face.

Helping healthy parents find a way to keep their divorce out of the court room has been one of my most important career goals. In a safe space, parents come together to creatively develop parenting plans. Without the pressure of lawyers or the court, parents can make the most creative and flexible arrangements for their children. Using a Child and Family Focused Model, the parents decide together what each of their children need and how they can each be a part of making that happen.

“Life goes on, within you and without you.” George Harrison

Crisis prompts change. It disrupts our status quo and offers a window into new ways to live life, though at the time it is rarely welcomed.

Short-term therapy helps to navigate a crisis, provides necessary skills and helps you to find your balance.

Longer-term therapy helps you to understand patterns in your communication or behavior that could contribute to potential problems in the future and offers skills to change those as well.

 FAQs

  • Every family's journey is different. Some families benefit from just a few educational sessions, while others find value in ongoing support through various transitions. We regularly evaluate progress with you to ensure our services continue to meet your changing needs.

  • We understand that accessing mental health support can be financially challenging. Some of our services can be offered on a sliding scale based on family income. We encourage clients to check with their insurance providers to explore potential reimbursement options. Our team provides detailed super bills with comprehensive documentation to support insurance claims, making the process as smooth as possible for families seeking support.

Before starting services, we recommend a quick call to your insurance provider to ask about your "out-of-network mental health benefits." This way, you'll know exactly what to expect financially. We're also glad to answer any questions about this process – just ask!

  • While we work collaboratively with legal professionals when appropriate, many of our services don't require attorney involvement. If you're involved in court proceedings, we can provide documentation of your participation in our programs when helpful.

  • Absolutely. Resistance to discussing family changes is completely normal, especially for children and teens. Our counselors are skilled at engaging children through age-appropriate activities that don't force direct conversations but still provide valuable support.

  • Safety always comes first. We have specialized protocols for families with a history of violence or abuse allegations and can work with protective services and the court system to ensure appropriate safeguards while still supporting children's relationships when safe and appropriate.

  • Children often experience emotional challenges during significant life transitions, whether it's family changes, academic stress, social difficulties, or personal growth hurdles. While not all children show obvious signs of distress, many can benefit from professional support that helps them develop coping skills, emotional resilience, and a deeper understanding of their feelings. Our initial consultation provides a comprehensive assessment of your child's unique needs, offering personalized recommendations to support their mental health and emotional well-being.

  • Our specialized approach goes beyond generic counseling, offering targeted strategies for individuals and families navigating complex life transitions, relationship challenges, and personal growth. We understand that mental health journeys are deeply personal, and sometimes a fresh perspective can make all the difference. Our comprehensive, nuanced approach addresses the unique needs of each individual, drawing on extensive experience and proven therapeutic techniques. Many individuals find hope and healing with us after previous counseling experiences that didn't meet their needs.

Children have only one childhood. The decisions and transitions happening now will shape their sense of security, their understanding of relationships, and their emotional wellbeing for years to come.

Our counselors have immediate openings for new families, but these fill quickly. Early intervention leads to better outcomes for everyone involved.
