Helping Your Teen Navigate Changes in the Family with TeensConnex

Teenagers have a lot going on, and if you are the parent of one, so do you. When families go through changes, like separation or divorce, the challenges of parenting a teen multiply by factors of new schools, homes, shifting family dynamics, and processing the emotions that accompany all of it. The National Family Resiliency Center (NFRC) is here for you and your teen on every step of their journey through a program especially designed for them called TeensConnex.  The Parent Connection part of TeensConnex  provides parents with information on how they can be supportive and helpful to their teens during the transition.

What is TeensConnex?

TeensConnex is a two-session, virtual program for teens ages 12-18 who are experiencing a family transition – a separation, divorce or breakup of a relationship between their parents.  The program sessions are 90 minutes long and are led by licensed clinicians. Teens will have an opportunity to process emotions, recognize healthy and unhealthy relationship dynamics, and build skills to navigate family changes while growing and developing in an ever-changing world. It’s designed to be a grounding, supportive and safe space.

What are the topics covered in TeensConnex?

·         The Grief Process: Teens learn that the emotions that they experience are normal, and universal! They learn that they are not alone, and recognize, label and express the universal feelings the people experience related to change and loss. Once identified, teens learn strategies to manage the more difficult emotions.

·         Family Changes: Family dynamics can be complicated, and teens are at a developmental stage where they can begin to identify and understand healthy and unhealthy patterns of interactions and the roles that they plan in them.

·         Getting Help: Teens like to think that they have it all under control, and if they do seek support, it will likely be from another teen. This segment of the program informs teens about safe and unsafe behaviors, emotions, and dynamics and how to access support.

·         Coping: Teens gain insight into  how their thinking can influence their feelings and, consequently, their behaviors. Teens will learn practical communication and conflict resolution skills that will benefit them in every area of their lives.

·         Building Bridges: It’s natural for teens to begin to pull away from their parents in an effort to become more independent. In this segment, teens learn how to connect with their parents in healthy ways, and to acknowledge the loss if a parent is unable to be there for them in a safe and consistent way.

·         Becoming Aware of Myself and Taking Charge of My Life: Teens work with the support of each other to envision their future and the steps to take to get there. This includes defining what healthy relationships will look like for them, now and in the future.

What is the Parent Connection part of TeensConnex about?

At the close of the second session parents are invited to attend a brief Parent Connection session which will provide parents with tools and strategies to help support their teens as their teens navigate the transition.
