September Three-Part Seminar (Howard County)
September 9, 16 & 23, 2019

NFRC’s Parent Education Programs provide strategies for parents to help their children adjust to separation, divorce and other family transitions. These seminars are led by trained mental health professionals. The Parenting Seminar is held as three evening sessions. Pre-registration is required. After completing all three sessions (in chronological order), participants will receive individual Certificates of Completion which are recognized by the court. Please note: registrations must be received at least two days prior to the first session date, and prepayment is required. Child care is NOT provided; please do not bring children to the seminars. No payment can be accepted at the door.

Sessions times are 6:30 – 9:30 p.m. Sign in begins at 6:10. No one will be admitted after 6:25 p.m. Please allow extra time for rush hour traffic.

The first two co-parent seminars help parents understand the developmental needs of children, how grief impacts decision making and the importance of parents working together for the best interests of their children. The facilitators educate parents about the effect of a family transition on parents and children, give parents an opportunity to learn co-parenting communication skills and present a brief overview of the legal process.  Parents attending have an opportunity to hear directly from youth and parents (either through video or live presentations) who have experienced a family transition.

The third parent plan seminar helps parents to prepare a parent plan that focuses on addressing the needs of their children. This parent plan seminar helps parents to discuss and agree upon the most important parts of parenting time and parent responsibilities. Most importantly, it helps parents to talk to each other, develop and write a co-parent plan that will help parents and their children throughout their lives. NFRC’s goal for parents attending is for them to complete a child-focused parent plan that parents can take to their mediator, attorney, court hearing or co-parenting counselor.
