Peer Counseling

Peer Counseling

Peer counselors are very special individuals who want to offer support to others who are experiencing many of the same emotions and situations that they have experienced. They meet at NFRC on a regular basis and share with each other the sadness, anger, or confusion that they might be feeling.

Youngsters and adults who have been NFRC clients are trained by NFRC staff as peer counselors in order to be helpful and supportive to other youngsters and adults. Because they experienced a significant change within their own families, and have experienced our counseling services first-hand, NFRC peer counselors provide a support system for children who are faced with the pain and confusion associated with separation and divorce. In addition, to qualify to be a NFRC peer counselor, you must have participated in individual, family or group therapy at NFRC or have been recommended by your guidance counselor from your school. In addition, you must be available to do at least one of the following:

Volunteer on a weekly basis in groups

  • Volunteer on a monthly basis on a parent or children’s panel during Divorce Education Seminars for Parents
  • Write articles for the peer counselor newsletter
  • Work with therapists to support clients in crisis
  • Give school presentations to psychology classes at mental health days
  • Meet monthly as a group to provide support for one another
