Programs and Support for Families, Parents, and Children
NFRC serves more than 1,000 families members each year through comprehensive family, multiple family, and group clinical programs; preventive educational programs, and volunteer peer counseling.
Programs include individual, family and couple therapy, support groups for children and young adults, men’s and women’s support groups and KidsConnex educational seminar and co parent education seminar for adults.
NFRC’s Group Programs:
- Research shows that groups are one of the most helpful ways to assist children and teens in coping with family transitions
- Kids see that they are not alone, and can feel safe and comfortable coping with issues that they may not in school and other environments
- Kids report that they learn to feel comfortable speaking up
in groups, a secondary gain
Middle and High School Teen Groups: Teens whose families are experiencing a transition such as separation or divorce aren't necessarily going to cheer when a parent says ," You are going to counseling." Groups for teens are a natural extension of their peer group and the safe, confidential environment in group helps kids to see that they are not alone, feel comfortable expressing their feelings and have a sense of hope that they can go on with their lives. Research shows that when teens don't have a safe outlet to express their feelings, deal with family changes and cope with stress, there is a higher likelihood of depression, substance use and school problems. The teen groups typically last for 12 weeks; a small investment of time compared to lifelong problems that can result when kids don't have support!
